How to make the BEST Pina Colada

Hey Cocktail fans, welcome back to the Blog. Today, we're going to give you 2 ways to make a Pina Colada Cocktail and then give you a few ideas about how to create some fun and tasty Pina Colada Variations at home.

First up, the Coconut. The vital ingredient to these Cocktails. You obviously can't make a Pina Colada without Coconut.

Here at Drinkstuff, we sell quite a few Coconut Syrups and Purees. Even a Pina Colada Syrup, which I've used to make an amazing Pina Colada Iced Tea before!

The advantage of having syrup or puree over Coconut Cream is that they have a long life and are shelf-stable.

What is the difference between Coconut Cream and Cream of Coconut?

Basically, the difference between Coconut Cream and Cream of Coconut (Like Monin Le Fruit, Reál, Funkin and ODK) is that Coconut Cream is thick Cream made from Coconut Milk. When you chill coconut milk, a thick cream forms on top and that is coconut cream. Cream of Coconut, or Coconut Purees like these, are, in fact, Coconut Cream mixed with Sugar or Syrup to make it Long Life, which is perfect for Bars and you guys at home. Coco Lopez is also NOT Coconut Cream. It's a Cream of Coconut. It's a very similar product to Monin, ODK, Reál and Funkin.

Also note. Coconut Cream and Cream of Coconut are not interchangeable in Recipes. You have to adjust the balance, simply because the Coconut Cream will be unsweetened. If you're making a pina colada with coconut cream, you will definitely need to add a sugar syrup to balance it.

What is the Difference between Coconut Puree (Cream of Coconut) and Coconut Syrup?

When you get to the Syrups, they are great but probably not what you want for a Pina Colada because they lack the creamy texture. They'll simply give you coconut-flavoured pineapple juice! They are a lot higher in Sugar Content, meaning they're a lot lower in Coconut content.

How to make a Pina Colada

Shaken AND Blended

You will need;

  • Pina Colada Glass
  • 50ml Rum of Choice
  • 50ml Pressed Pineapple Juice
  • 25ml ODK Coconut Puree

Steve the Barman really likes adding just 4-5 drops of a Saline Solution to his Pina Coladas too. Not much, but that little bit of Salt really elevates the Coconut!

Saline Solution is just a 4:1 Ratio of Salt to Water. For example, add 20g of salt to 80g of water. Try to use Cornish Salt because it's the best. But Malldon is okay too... It'll keep for ages in your Fridge.

Simply add a Scoop of Crushed Ice and Blend for 5-10 seconds. Or Shake REALLY HARD with Cubed Ice and Pour over Crushed Ice in a Glass.

Pina Colada Variations

It is really simple to create Pina Colada Twists. The 3 we recommend are Banana, Strawberry and Mango.

However, Adding these to the recipe above could make the Cocktail too Sweet. So what we would suggest is Bringing the Coconut down to 15ml and adding 15ml of the other flavours.
