Aquavit

Glossary of Terms

Aquavit (also spelt Aquavite or Akavit), also known as Snaps is a spirit that is mainly produced in Scandinavian countries. It has a distinctive flavour as it produced from spices and herbs, has a clear to pale yellow colour and is typically 40% ABV. Aquavit takes its name from the Latin for 'water of life' and is produced by distilling from fermented potato or gain mash, redistilled with flavouring and filtered through charcoal. It is most commonly served chilled and unmixed in a small glass, served with appetizers or sandwiches.
