Absinthe

Glossary of terms

Absinthe is a high alcohol content spirit, between 45% and 75% depending on variety, distilled using grande wormwood (artemisia absinthium), green anise, sweet fennel and other herbs. Absinthe originated in 18th Century Switzerland, and rose to popularity in late 19th century and early 20th century France where it gained the nickname "The Green Fairy". Absinthe has famously been banned in numerous countries around the world due to its high alcohol content believed to cause negative effects including hallucinations.
Absinthe is traditionally prepared by placing a slotted spoon over a glass of absinthe with a sugar cube on top. Iced water is poured or dripped over the sugar cube, commonly from an absinthe fountain. The final solution usually contains 1 part absinthe and 3-5 parts water.
